Floyd

Floyd $15.00
Extra Wing $10.00

48" Wingspan, 8.5" Chord with Ailerons, 17-29 oz. flying weight. 2 to 6 hours to build this simple slope glider! The first 20 FLOYD kits, designed by Jess Walls and Joe Geiger, were built by Redwood Soaring members in less than two hours on the morning of the AAROC slope races in May of `94. Most planes were flying well before the two hour mark! Through crashes, mid-airs and tight competition, each plane performed beautifully. Jess and Joe designed the FLOYD to be inexpensive, quick to build, easily repaired and most of all, FUN! WHAT YOU GET: The FLOYD SEMI KIT consists of a FOAMULAR (c) semi symmetrical, wire cut 2 piece foam wing and fuselage. Included are the instructions, and a copy of the general layout. Assembly is quickly done with clear packing tape. The foam is lightweight and very strong. Yes, the foam is bright pink, so visibility is not a problem! In the air, the FLOYD is stable and rises in almost any lift. Competition is fast enough to raise your adrenaline, yet slow enough for a novice flyer to join in the fun. Accidents typically cause only minor damage, easily repaired with tape. On impact, FLOYDS tend to bounce! With aileron roll control and elevator, the FLOYD makes for a great second kit, however, several have been built and flown by novices. The wing gives good all around flight and can handle a variety of wind velocities. FLOYDS have even been seen launched from hi-starts into weak Northern CA thermals. Experience those advanced maneuvers without risking an expensive model. FLOYDS make for a great club activity, after all, that's what they were designed for- to ge the whole club out for our annual "KING OF THE BLUFF" contest. Building time and costs are low. EVERYONE can compete because everyone flies the same plane with the same weight and speed. Smooth flying and consistency win races. Look no further for that fun little trickster or one design racer- the FLOYD does it all!

Kit includes Foam wing cores, foam fuselage and printed instructions.
Requires a 2 to 3-channel radio for ailerons and elevator. Rudder is optional, so a low cost 3 channel radio would work great. The Plane was designed for standard size servos. The photo above is what your FLOYD might look like when finished. When you get your kit in the mail it will look like the photo below
.

This is a Semi-Kit. These are the materials you will need to complete this kit and must be purchased separately:

Radio: 3 or 4 Channel, 2 to 4 servos depending on builder preference. STANDARD servos work best. Uses one servo for the ailerons, and one in the tail for the elevator.

Battery Pack: 4 Cell, Nicad AA (600 mah) or NIMH AA (1600-2100 mah) cells.

Covering: Fiberglass strapping tape (about 10 feet), 2 rolls of different colors of 2 mil packing tape OR 2 different colors/rolls of iron-on covering. Econokote and Towerkote work well. Ultracoat is heavier but is supposed to work as well.

Wood: 1/8 sheeting for control surfaces. A hardwood spar is need to stiffen the wing. Use a 1/4" x 1/2" x 48" spruce stick. Optionally, 1/16 balsa sheeting to glue on sides of the fuselage.

Misc hardware: 1/2A size Control Horns, and pushrods for the Servos. Piano wire works for pushrods. Try to use mini hardware as full sized hardware is unnecessarily heavy.

Adhesive: Many glues workwell, these are some of the more popular: Elmer's White Glue, 5-6 minute epoxy, Gorilla Glue, Hot glue gun

Misc tools: Yardstick, Extra soldering iron for cutting hatches in the foam fuselage.
